Today, I’m going to show you 5 Korean ice creams that you should try in Korea. They were picked from my very subjective point of view.🤣🤣
Korean ice cream is mostly on a stick. If I say so, then you guys may think they are like popsicles but it’s not true.
There are soft and shaped ice creams on a stick so people say the main characteristic of Korean ice cream is softness!
1. Melona 메로나
If I think of Korean Ice cream, the first thing that came into my mind is this Melona. This one is so popular at the moment that you guys may know this already.
Nothing special from what it looks like, it’s a very simple rectangular shape and it’s green. It tastes like honeydew melon flavor and very soft. It’s not like a popsicle. It’s ice cream on a stick. It is so soft and delicate and I heard an actor who is very famous here in Korea drinks Soju(소주) with this because of its softness. I should try it someday.
2. Dwe-ji-ba 돼지바
It’s basically strawberry filling with vanilla ice cream covered with chocolate crumbles which is like cereal.
Dwe-ji-ba literally means “pig bar” but I still don’t know why this is called Dwe-ji-ba. Does it look like a pig?
And I finally find the reason!
This ice cream came out in 1983 and it was the year of the pig which means richness and fortune. I didn’t know that… and that’s interesting!
If you guys love the ice cream with various textures, this one is the best ice cream in Korea.
I love this but you’ve gotta be careful because these crumbles drop everywhere.
3. Boong-eo-ssa-man-ko 붕어 싸만코
It’s goldfish shaped. This shape is a different version of ice cream cone and there is red bean paste in it.
I know many people from western countries are not a big fan of red beans but If I didn’t say that there is red bean paste in it, you guys hardly know what is in it.
The red bean flavor is so mild and it is not what you think, so please give it a shot. This boong-eo-ssa-man-ko is the sweetest ice cream I’ve ever had for my entire life.
And I have one memory about this ice cream. It was the ice cream that I ate when I was trained in the navy. It was the only sweet food that was allowed to me for 13 weeks. Imagine how sweet it was if you didn’t get any of sweet dessert for more than 3 months and you just had it. It was unforgettable!
4. Seol-le-im 설레임
Have you guys ever seen this kind of ice-cream before?
The package is quite interesting, right? You have to squeeze it while eating this.
It tastes like a vanilla milkshake. The taste of this ice-cream is not particularly different from frozen milkshake so I guess you guys all love this.
This ice cream always reminds me of my high school teacher. Actually, the name 설레임[Seol-le-im] is not a correct Korean. It should be 설렘. It’s like a thrill in English. But because of this ice cream, many students picked the wrong answer on the Korean test and the teacher kept saying don’t say 설레임. It was quite interesting to me at that time, so I still remember that.
5. Papico 빠삐코
This ice cream is called Papico 빠삐코. There is creamy chocolate ice cream inside of this plastic container. The way we eat this ice cream is quite fun.
You need to pull this plastic handle and this part is the beauty of this ice cream. For the first time, this ice cream is too frozen so hard to eat, so you need to rub it or twist it to melt it.
And if you don’t like ice cream melting into your hand in hot summer, this one would be the best ice cream ever.
If there is any convenience store around you, then you guys can find those 5 ice cream very easily, so please try them if you visit Korea.
