Hello from Singapore! We are at Lau Pa Sat, Satay Street. Yes, today, we’re going to have a BBQ in the heart of Singapore’s business district. Even though we were exhausted from a long flight, we couldn’t resist the grilled skewers with cold beer. You know what I’m talking about, right?
Where To Eat
We decided to try the “Best Satay 7 & 8” because this place is super popular among Koreans. The boss took my order in Korean very smoothly and he even used another language after me. He really knows how to run a business, right?
What To Order
Anyways, we ordered Set A, which included 10 chicken satay, 10 pieces of mixed beef and mutton, and 6 prawns. (If you have a preference for a specific protein like beef or mutton, make sure to tell them beforehand. Otherwise, you may end up with 10 beef or 10 mutton instead of a mix.)
Although it was quite late, this particular stall appeared to be busier than other stalls. If you’re interested in trying their satay, please be aware that there could be a long waiting time. Since we arrived at midnight, we didn’t wait that long, but if you come here before 9, you may need to wait an additional 20 or 30 minutes compared to other stalls.
However, there is a good thing about eating at a popular stall. Since they have a pretty good turnover rate, you will have a higher chance of having a good-quality grilled skewers. But the thing is, even if it’s not a busy time, you may have to wait a little bit because it takes some time to cook. But don’t worry about it. We have an amazing Hawker Center right behind the stall.
Usually, when you’re seated at a table, you can easily see beer vendors walking around. But I think they were all gone because it was too late, so we went inside to get one ourselves. (For your information, Singapore has high taxes on liquor, so drinks are quite expensive here.)
The chicken skewer had a mild sweetness with a hint of saltiness and smokiness. And this nutty peanut sauce enhanced the taste of the chicken. The beef and mutton were good, too, but I personally preferred chicken over these bad boys, because they were made with lean cuts of meat, so it was a little bit less flavorful and a bit tough to chew.
But you don’t have to worry about it. Unlike fancy restaurants, it’s hard to maintain the same level of quality and consistency due to the nature of street food markets. When you visit here, your beef and mutton could taste better than the chicken, and I think that’s the beauty of street food markets.
While we were waiting for the satay, we got some Char Siu Wonton Noodles from the Hawker Center. The noodles were perfectly cooked and doused with an amazing sauce. The char siu was sweet and smoky and had a delightful chewiness to it. I really appreciated being able to get this kind of delicious food at an affordable price.
Now, let’s talk about the wontons. The wrappers were incredibly thin and delicate, and there were big chunks of shrimp inside. Without any sauce or vinegar, it was perfect by itself. The refreshing beer and the atmosphere of this night market made them so much more delicious. We couldn’t stop eating them.
Lastly, the prawn skewers. They were grilled over charcoal and the shells were removed, except for the head and tail, so it was very easy to eat. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of shrimp or crab because peeling shells always makes me crazy, but here, I could just dip it in the sauce and enjoy. I felt like I could eat it all day.
Overall, I can’t say this is the best place for satay in Singapore, but visiting this kind of night market will definitely give you an unforgettable experience. The fantastic skyline, refreshing beer, and delicious BBQ helped us relax and unwind before bedtime, so I highly recommend visiting this place.
